An 88-year-old female was seen in the physician’s office complaining of SOB, dizziness, orthopnea, elevated temperature, and a productive cough. Lung auscultation revealed rales over the R bronchus. CXR revealed fluid in the RUL. The patient was sent to the hospital with an admitting diagnosis of pneumonia. Vital signs upon admission were: temperature 102°F, pulse 100 and rapid, respirations 24 and labored, blood pressure 180/110. She was treated with IV antibiotics and IPPB. She responded well to treatment and was released home to her family with oral antibiotics on the third day.
1. Define auscultation and CXR. Describe what each revealed in your own words.
2. What does the term “vital signs” mean? Describe the patient’s vital signs in your own words.
3. Describe the treatments she received while in the hospital in your own words.
(1) Answers:-
(a)AUSCULTATION:- it is the act of listening to sounds arising
within organs (such as the lungs) as an aid to diagnosis and
treatment.
- it reveal Cardiac sounds, bowel sounds and carotid artery bruit
etc.
(b) CXR (CHEST X-RAY) :-
- It is a radiology test that involves exposing the chest briefly
to radiation to produce an image of the chest and the internal
organs of the chest. -An X-ray film is positioned against the body
opposite the camera, which sends out a very small dose of a
radiation beam.
- As the radiation penetrates the body, it is absorbed in varying
amounts by different body tissues depending on the tissue's
compositions. - Exampe- Bones absorb much of the X-ray radiation
while lungs absorbs very little, allowing most of the X-ray beam to
pass through the lung.
2. VITAL SIGNS:-
- these are clinical measurements, specifically pulse rate,
temperature, respiration rate, and blood pressure, that indicate
the state of a patient's essential body functions.
- Vital sign of the Patients are as follow:-
Temperature =
102°F
Pulse = 100 and
rapid
Respiration =24 and
labored
Blood pressure = 180/110
mm Hg
3. TREATMENT :-
a) I.V antibiotics are-
- Levofloxacin.
-fluoroquinolone
b) IPPB(Intermittent positive pressure breathing):- It is a
respiratory therapy treatment for people who are
hypoventilating.
