The Gospel of Wealth asserts that hard work and perseverance
lead to wealth. Carnegie based his philosophy on the observation
that the heirs of large fortunes frequently squandered them in
riotous living rather than nurturing and growing them.
His steel empire produced the raw materials that built the physical
infrastructure of the United States. He was a catalyst in America's
participation in the Industrial Revolution, as he produced the
steel to make machinery and transportation possible throughout the
nation.
While such growth was “essential for the progress of the race,” it
unequivocally widened the wealth gap between the rich and the poor.
Through the Gospel of Wealth, Carnegie entreated the wealthy
“Robber Barons” of his time to address this imbalance through
philanthropy.
The Gospel of Wealth supported richindustrialists by saying that
their wealtheventually benefited the poor. Social Darwinismdefends
capitalism by saying that their wealth isearned through the natural
order of nature. Both supported capitalism, but had different ways
of expressing and defending their views.
We can only bend it a little in a favorable direction, and the laws
of individualism, private property, accumulation of wealth,
andcompetition are the soil in which society so far has produced
the best fruit.
