Simple Squamous Epithelium: It is a single
layer of flat cells in contact with basal lamina of epithelium.
- Basal lamina is one of the two layers of basement membrane
which is made up of proteins and mucopolysaccharides separating
epithelium from tissue.
- Function: It plays a role in transport of
materials and absorption through Diffusion,Osmosis and Filtration
process.
- Location: Blood Vessels (Inner lying of blood
vessels to reduce friction for blood flow) and walls of Alveoli(
for exchange of gases between Air and Blood)
DISEASE INVOLVING SIMPLE SQUAMOUS EPITHELIUM:
Emphysema( in animals)is a condition where there is damage to the
alveoli where there is difficulty in expelling air from the lungs
as a result the body do not get sufficient amount of oxygen. They
are classified into two types: 1.Alveolar Emphysema 2.Interstitial
Emphysema
- The Walls of Alveoli are damaged in Emphysema leading to
squamous metaplasia which is changes in the Squamous epithelium
structure.
- The Emphysema is seen in both animals and Humans but the
factors of causing are different. In animals,Emphysema is commonly
seen in Dogs and the causes are Lung Trauma,Cancer, lung
Parasites,Congenital Bronchial Hypoplasia.
