A post-operative patient has an order for Kefzol 1gram in 50 mL of D5W over 30 minutes. The medication will be infused via an IV pump. How many milliliters per hour should the pump be programmed for?
Ordered Dose = Kefzol 1 gm in 50 mL of D5W over 30 minutes
mL/ hr pump programmed for = ?
Calculation: We have to find the mL/hr flow rate to be given per hour to te patient from the given dose concentration
Flow rate to be programmed = 50 mL X (60 min / 30 min) hr
[ 60 min = 1 hr and we have to find the per hour flow rate to be programmed in mL/ hr]
Flow rate to be programmed = 50 mL X (2) hr [ parameters in mL and hr ]
Flow rate to be programmed = 100 mL/hr
Therefore, we have to programme the pump for 100 mL/hr to infuse the IV ordered dose of Kefzol 1gram in 50 mL of D5W over 30 minutes
