define ' access to health care service' and why is this important?
Why are Maori's getting less services in New Zealand? and define or describe the issue
What is the epidemiological analysis of this?
Access to health care services means "the timely use of personal
health services to achieve the best health outcomes ".
it requires 3 distinct steps -
1) gaining entry into health care system (usually through insurance coverage )
2)accessing a location where needed health care services are provided (geographic ability )
3) finding a health care provider whom the patient trust and can communicate with (personal relationship)
It is important for promoting and maintaining health, preventing and managing disease, reducing
unnecessary disability and premature deaths , and achieving health equity .
Maoris are getting less services in new Zealand because of complex mix of components associated with socioeconomic and lifestyle factors , availability of health care and discriminaton.
socioeconomic factors associated are -Maori men were more than twice likely associated to die premature than non-Maori.
Lifestyle-maoris smoke tobaccos at a higher rate than non- maoris and maoris women are obese and hypertensive .
Access to health care -maoris are less likely to be referred for surgical care and specialist services and that given the disparity in mortality they recieve lower than expected quality hospital care .
