A Patient’s Journey: Meaningful Use Stage 3 and MIPS:
Patient-centered healthcare system is a foremost feature of high
quality health care which ensures providing medical care that is
respectful and responsive to patients.
The health care system should involve patients and families in
decision making process which should be consistent with their
needs, values and preferences. Recent studies in this area shows
that clinicians asks for preferences of patient’s regarding their
decision making in treatment only about half the time.
There are number of obstacles which prevent the involvement of
patient in decision making. That included the following:
. Emotional state of the patient
. Financial situation of the patient and his family
. Logistical consequences of the diagnosis
. Complexity of treatment options
. Limitation of patient in health literacy
. Lack of experience with the health care system.
. Clinicians often lack training in effective communication with
parents
. Lack of understandable and easily available information on whole
treatment
Patient centered health care system must ensure good
communication between patient and the health caregivers .
. Developing and implementing evidence based information to inform
patients, caregivers and the treatment team which practise shared
decision making
. Better training of clinicians in effective communication with
patients which helps recognising and responding to emotional and
informational needs of patient.
. Ensuring easily availability of informations such as prognosis,
treatment options, likelihood of treatment responses, palliative
care, psychological support, cost of treatment.
. Coordination and integration of medical care.
. Providing emotional support for relieving fear and anxiety as
well as addressing mental health issues.
Health care system should ensure a patient-centered communication
which incorporates following main functions:
. Effective exchange of information
. Promotes healing relationships
. Empathetic response to emotions
. Effective management of uncertainty
. Efficient decision making
. Encouraging self-management of patient
These skills need to be developed and maintained and which will
later reflect in the quality of patient-clinician interactions and
thus ultimately influence better outcome of patient’s health.
