RAND health insurance expiriment was an expirimental study from 1974 to 1982 of health care cost utilization and outcomes in the United States whuch assigned people form randomly to difrent kinds of plans and followed their behaviour. Because it was a randomized controlled trial it provided stronger evidence that the more common observational studies and conclude that cost sharing reduced inapropriate or unnecessory medical cae but also reduce appropriate or needed medical care.

The expiriment reinforces relation between growth of third party reimbursement and increasing health care costs , Cost sharing is a common plans involve different degree of cost sharing, This found that cost sharing results in low cost in comparison to free plan.
