In a 100-150 word response, discuss what you think the current status of Québec independence is. Do you think we will see another referendum for independence? Why or Why not?
Ans- Québec is a predominantly French-speaking province in eastern Canada with 2 vibrant cities in its south, connected by the Chemin du Roy highway along the Saint Lawrence River. Quebec has voted twice against independence, but the question has never been settled or gone away.
On a recent summer's evening, along streets lined with onlookers waving the blue and white fleur-de-lis flag rather than the Canadian maple leaf, a parade was staged in Quebec City retelling the story of the settlement of New France.(source bbc news).
But though Quebec would hardly be a poor country, it might well be poorer than it is now. Because of its ageing population and higher-than-average unemployment, it is a beneficiary of transfer payments from the Canadian federal government. It has a relatively small tax base.
It has been said that quebec has been seperated from canada but Quebec is not explicitly declared distinct in the Constitution of Canada. This is the current independence situation of Quebec.
An independence referendum is a type of referendum in which the citizens of a territory decide whether the territory should become an independent sovereign state.
As we have seen two referendum for independence in Quebec in 1980 and 1995, we may see again a referendum for independence because as mentioned above that quebec is still not explicitly declared distinct in the constitution of Canada.
