The Silverman score is a system that is used to assess the level of respiratory distress of a newborn. The signs of distress are:
1. Nasal flaring
2. Expiratory grunting
3. Tachypnea
4. Retractions.
Please discuss the following for each distress.
1. Sign
2. Intervention used to correct it.
1) NASAL FLARING
Sign
Nasal flaring happen when the nostrils broaden at the time of breathing. The major sign is problems in breathing and this is normally occuring in the small kids and also in the infants.
Intervention used to correct it
The primary treatment is based on the seriousness of attack.
The Inhaled corticosteroids are usually used as a treatment method and this can alleviate inflammation of our airways.
The therapy may also involve a nebulizer, that change the liquid drug to a thin mist which could be inhaled.
2) EXPIRATORY GRUNTING
Sign
The grunting in the end of each and every breath can be a sign of the respiratory distress.
One another sign for the infants and children other than grunting is fever.
Actually grunting is a expiratory sound produced by the newborns with respiratory difficulties. This happen in every part of expiratory phase of the breathing and which symbolize breath against a partly locked glottis.
Intervention used to correct it
Opening of the airway, making sure that sufficient circulation and the breathing are the primary way of management.A child in this condition is required to be on the constant pulse oximeter observation to determine when the ventilation and intubation is needed.
3) TACHYPNEA
Sign
Signs involve bluish-grey tint of skin, gums, lips, chest ache, high temperature fever and the breathing which gets bad over time.
Intervention used to correct it
The treatment needs recognizing and treating the basic cause. For instance,if the asthma is responsible,an inhaler must be utilized for opening the airways. But if there is a problematic attack because of anxiety, medicines must be consumed( beta-blockers)
4) RETRACTIONS
Sign
Decreased air pressure in the chest.
Intercostal muscles will be sucked internally, between the ribs at the time of breathing.
By this way the airway will be closed.
Intervention used to correct it
Supporting the affected individual to breath once more.
Providing oxygen or certain medicines which can clear any kind of swelling in the respiratory system.
