Module 01 written-assessment and health and illness beliefs
HEALTH AND ILLNESS BELIEF:-
- Nurses today provide care, education, and case management to a
incredibly diverse patient population involved with cultural,
linguistic, and health literacy barriers.
- Nurses will be required to treat people of different backgrounds
while providing the same quality of care.
- It is important to be prepared for the challenges this may bring
and to be understanding of these differences.
- The illness beliefs of differing heritages can influence the
nurse’s assessment of the patient. The patient’s expression and the
nurse’s interpretation may be affected by the culture of either
part.
- All cultures have their own recognized symptoms of ill
health.
-E.g.-A person of
European heritage may respond to the question “how are you feeling
today?” much differently.
-Healthcare can be a complex issue. Cultural and language barriers
can complicate the situation even more. Assessment of these
patients can raise many issues that the nurse needs to be aware of
and address in order to come up with a specific diagnosis and an
acceptable plan of treatment that respects the patient’s cultural
beliefs.
