Many hearing and vision problems can be prevented or corrected with proper medical care. However, identifying those who are affected by or at risk for these problems can be challenging. Are primary care providers as well as nurses asking about vision and hearing?
Auditory as well as Optalmic problems are seen largely among the population.
But during assessment focus may be given to respiratory, circulatory as well as renal assessment which may lead to lack of assessment in this section. Hence nurses must be equipped to identify various auditory and opthalmic conditions.
With assessment of the ear for redness, swelling, mass and wax assessment can help analyze the presence of any defect. As kids are known to suffer from central auditory processing disorder which may go unnoticed. Primary assessment must be carried out to determine the type of hearing loss(conducive, sensorineural, mixed)
Ophthalmic assessment can also be carried out to check for keratomalacia, night blindness, bitots spot e, catarac, retinal conditions. Which may help in early diagnosis and treatment and prevent complete damage.
Hence nurses must carry out visual and auditory assessment which may not be as Usual.
