Discussion: 1. Prepare a graph of %volume condensed vs. temperature. 2. Explain the characteristic properties of matter that the process of distillation relies upon. Why and how does this process work? 3. In distillation test, what is the purpose of the condenser? 4. Compare crude oil fractions with higher boiling points to those with lower boiling points and answer these questions:
1 ) Answer in the image uploaded.
2 ) A mixture of two volatile liquids are boiled then the first portions of the condensed vapor will be enriched in the component having the lower boiling point.
Distillation is the process of heating a liquid until it boils, then condensing and collecting the resultant hot vapors.
Process - When a mixture of two or more liquid samples are heated under closes vessel called as distillation flask Then the liquid having low boiling points are evapurated & when passe through condenser it becomes cool & collected in seperatye vessel.
The liquid remaining inthe flask is having high boiling point & thus seperated.
3) Purpouse of condensor - Condensor is apparatus used to condense substances from its gaseous state to liquid states.
4 ) The crude oil contains more than two hydrocarbon compounds & because of there different boiling points, the substances in crude oil can be separated using fractional distillation. The crude oil is evaporated and its vapours allowed to condense at different temperatures in the fractionating column. Each fraction contains hydrocarbon molecules with a similar number of carbon atoms.
The lower boiling point fraction contains lower hydrocarbons eg. LPG ,Petrol etc & The higher boiling point fraction contains higher hydrocarbons eg . Diesel , Heating oil , paraffine etc
