Various categories of date that are used in statistical analysis:

(1) Numerical data (also called Quantitative data): The category of data have meaning as a measurement.

     Example: height, weight, blood pressure etc.

Numerical data can be of 2 types:

(i) Discrete data: Items that can take only finite number of values

    Example: Number of students in a class

(ii) Continuous data: Items that can take any value in a given interval

    Example: Height, weight etc

(2) Categorical data (also called Qualitative data): Data that represent characteristics such as gender, marital status etc.

Categorical data can be of 2 types:

(i) Nominal data: Data which has no intrinsic ordering to its categories

Example: Gender (male or Female)

(ii) Ordinal data: data which can be arranged in increasing or decreasing order

Example: Rating of a restaurant on a given scale
