The three major domains of human
development are:
- Cognitive
- Physical
- Psychosocial
How developmernt in one domain may
lead to development in another domain:
- Physical changes in the body occur
as a result of maturation and biological development. Growth is
both due to physical growth and mental growth. Example: as a
toddler begins to walk, he becomes more physically developed, and
in order to walk properly, he might take support of a chair or some
nearby low table to get up.
- Mental growth can also be termed as
cognitive development. This is the stage where a person begins to
form an identity of themselves and others, inspired by the
household environment and the environment in the community.
Example: the toddler using a support with any nearby equipment or
furniture is an example of how the cognitive growth of the toddler
has started and he is able to identify things and implement them in
his own use. This cognitive development continues until the age
where complete language acquisition occurs, till age 11, where the
child learns from his parents, school, community and absorbs ideas
within his thought process. At certain times, if the child has
faced or seen some prejudices in his upbringing or noticed from his
community, he would start absorbing the same and mimicking those
actions.
- Interaction with people in the
community gives rise to a sense of community feeling and
togetherness or identifying themselves as being as a part of an
ingroup, thus leading to psychosocial development. Example: with
the growth of the child and absorbing ideas about people and
forming first hand impressions as imparted by primary care giver,
there might start formation of inclination towards a certain group,
community or people coming from the same neighbourhood or culture,
thus resulting in the development of the psychosocial domain.
