Endometriosis - It is defined as a tissue disorder in which a similar kind of tissue that forms the uterus lining (i.e. endometrium) grows outside the uterine cavity i.e. on ovaries, bowel, and lining of pelvis tissue. In this case, hormonal changes dring menstrual cycle causes the affected area to become inflamed and painful.
Symptoms - Common symptoms includes irritation, scars, pelvic pain, and fertility problems. Other symptoms are - painful periods, heavy bleeding, irritation during bowel movements, etc.
Etiology - Exact cause is unknown but various theories have been put forward to explain the possible cause behind it. one of the cause can be "retrograde menstruation" - when the menstrual blood flows back to the pelvic cavity through the fallopian tube. other reason can be th transformation of cells outside to uterus into cells similar to those lining the inside of the uterus.
Treatment - it has no cure but the seriousness and pain can be managed. Ibuprofen is a medicine for relieving pain but is not effective in all cases. it depends from person to person and should be consulted to doctor/physician. Hormonal therapy to stop the progression of disorder. in case of complications, surgery can also be an option.
Other Facts - Around 10% of women are affected by endometriosis. risk factors are Age, family or pregnancy history, etc.
