Evaluate this analogy for how hormones work: A hormone is like a public service announcement (PSA). The hormone is equivalent to the PSA message, which is sent out or exposed by a media outlet (endocrine cell) via cables and satellites (circulatory system) to members of the public (target cells). The PSA is sent to everyone but only applies to specific members and each member responds differently, if at all. They receive the PSA via phones, TVs, computers (receptors). Each phone, TV, computer belongs to a specific member of the public (target cell). Their response to the PSA is like the response in a target cell.

Identify at least two strengths and two weaknesses of this analogy and explain how it accurately or inaccurately represent how hormones work. Limit your answer to 150 words or less.

Solutions

Expert Solution

This anology for how hormones work is much comparable with the public service announcement (PSA).

Here the two weaknesses are:

  1. Lengthy and time consuming network: The network consists of various levels of transmission technologies or tissue, cells and nerves. During lengthy transmissions, the signal strength may be affected.
  2. The network may be blocked or the circulatory system may be blocked so no transmission of the information to some target cells may take place.
  3. The reverse of this system is impossible.

Here are the two strengths:

  1. Each and every person or the cell is the target of the information and thus the outcome will be beneficial.
  2. As every person or the cell is the response maker, so their different response levels will upgrade the overall system outcome effectively but the benefit will be for all.

It much accurately represents the hormonal system of the body as its technology levels are much similar to the hormonal transmission system in our body.

Trade in Hormone-Treated Beef In the 1970s, scientists discovered how to synthesize certain hormones and use them to accelerate the growth rate of livestock animals, reduce the fat content of meat, and increase milk production. Bovine somatotropin (BST), a growth hormone produced by cattle, was first synthesized by the biotechnology firm Genentech. Injections of BST could be used to supplement an animal’s own hormone production and increase its growth rate. These hormones soon became popular among farmers, who found that...
