The employer should follow the following screening steps to locate the right person for the right job.
1- Identify the key responsibilities attached to the position.
a) Nature of job- Whether its technical or non-technical;
b) If it’s technical – does it require trouble shooting;
c) Is this job involve application of specialized knowledge.
2- Break down the key responsibilities into various sub-parts, if the responsibilities demand so or if the responsibilities cover cross section of department.
a) Every industry has its own production schedule; each production schedule can be divided into sub-schedule or for an industry where various process are involved, each process /schedule will be managed by person with requisite specialized knowledge.
b) Do this job involve cutting across multiple department or it is restricted to a single department.
c) What type of communication skill are required for effective transmission of ideas, policies of the management, management of work force within and outside the department.
3- Identify the qualities and qualifications required to shoulder the responsibilities.
a) Qualities like sound managerial capability, man management capability, infuse team spirit, effective leadership qualities
b) Qualifications required for the job would include engineering degree holder for technical or manufacturing industry, finance professional for banking or investment company, etc.
4- Identify the type of experience or expertise required by the person to effectively handle the responsibilities.
a) If it’s a core sector industry, involving application of technical knowledge with precision, a person with previous experience in similar industry will be preferred.
5-Identiy and set a list of basic skills and troubleshooting skills required for that particular job.
a) Every job has its own peculiarities and a particular set of skill are required to manage that job.
b) Similarly, troubleshooting are unique to the industry concerned, and a person with knowledge of that sector can handle the situation better and evade or minimise the loss due to such trouble.
6-Prepare a list of candidates that fits most of the pre-set (1-5) screening lexicon.
A suitable or successful candidate will be one who has the requite experience , quality , qualification ,and expertise that is required for that particular job.
