Critical Thinking
In health care, medicine, and medical research there often occurs a clash in values. These conflicts exist amongst the providers and between the providers and the recipients of care. Provide an example of one such conflict.
1. Describe the situation or case
2. State what the conflict is
3. state clearly and deliberately and underlinewhat the Institutional values and individual values are that are in conflict. BE SURE that you do this. State the values. Be explicit and clear. Underline for emphasis. If you choose to use a personal case please do not use names or identify yourself. Put in in the third person and use pseudonyms.
1 situation of the case , the case happened 5years back in critical care department of a hospital. There was patient named Tommy ( nick name). He was admitted in hospital because of a bike accident his head strongly hit on road , after that he was in ventillator with comma. He was in ventillator for hardly for 9 months, no improvement in his condition and doctors confirmed his brain death. So his relatives and authorities were decided to give him a peaceful death. But his wife not agreeing, that was the situation.
2.The conflict was regarding a brain dead patient, his relatives want to take that patient from ventillator and gave him peaceful death. According to them fighting in that ventillator is a suffering for him however, his wife was not allowed to take him from ventillator.
3. When checking the institutional values, according to a healthcare system give ventillator to a brain dead patient is artificial treatment. Quality of life is absent in that patient. Prolonged ventilation wouldn't cure or improve his condition. According to medical team preponderance patient is not an eligible candidate for ventillator support according to them giving ventillator and other things are wastage of resources.
But in individual value , when to die is the right of a person. Appropriate measures standard protocols should be made regarding health condition of patient. Specific nature of patient's wishes regarding use of medical technology is considered.
These are the institutional values and individual values in this conflict.
