Explain (in your own words) what is Lead Poisoning Prevention and Healthy Homes Programs. Also, explain why it is important to get babies and pregnant women tested for lead poisoning. (NO PLAGIARIZING 300-500 WORDS)
Lead poisoning : Lead is highly
toxic metal found in various paints and in household materials. The
repeatative exposure of lead to the body leads to various physical,
mental and chemical malfunctioning. Lead poisoning is formally
defined in the US as at least 10 micrograms of lead per deciliter
of blood. Young children are more susceptible to lead poisoning
than that of adults.
Lead is very toxic metal and highly poisonous when inhaled in the
body. It may generate fatal signs and serious condition. However it
shows abdominal pain and symptoms related to constipation, fatigue,
vometing sensations. As lead gets deposited in the body mostly in
bones and gets release during pregnancy in the fetus. So it is
necessary to carry out testing for lead poisoning in babies and
pregnant women's to avoid further complications in health of new
born babies. Children are at the highest risk of lead poisoning,
especially if they are living in old houses with chipping paint.
This is because children are more prone to putting objects and
fingers in their mouths. Toys, wall paint and environmental
expossure are major source for lead exposure to children. It may
concern serious health issues to the children in future so we have
to take preventive steps towards control of lead poisoning.
Preventive measures :
1. Avoid maximum exposure to the industrial and chemical
dust.
2. Use face mask in susceptible areas while passing through to
avoid direct inhalation and reduce exposure to lead.
3. Avoid or throw away painted toys they may contain lead in
it.
4. Avoid use of canned goods from foreign countries as lead is one
of the composition for cans.
5. Avoid dust generation and Keep your home free from dust.
6. Use only cold water to prepare foods and drinks as boiling/ warm
water may contain some trace's of metal in which it is being
boiled.
7. Wash the hands before eating and maintain hygiene.
8. Test food and water for lead content. If lead levels are high,
use a filtering device or drink bottled water.
9. Keep the toys lead and arsenic free as part of regulatory system
it should be regularly monitored.
10. Make sure the site of material we are using have lead free
certificate
11. Eliminate maximum exposure to lead based materials in our daily
lifestyle.
12. Promote awareness to the environmental safety and prevention of
lead exposure.
13 . Use lead free drinking water to avoid deposition of heavy
metals in the body.
14. Get all the family member tested for lead test in blood
specially children and pregnant woman's as they are easy targets
for lead poisoning.
15. Avoid use of lead containing wall paints instead we can use
some other paints.
Once Lead is distributed to the brain, liver, kidney and bones in
the body. It is stored in the teeth and bones which is released
over time damaging brain and liver hence it is very important to
test and reduce lead exposure if any poisoning symptoms
represented.
