Solutions

Expert Solution

The correct option is b. There is very little phenotypic variation between monozygotic twins but high variability between dizygotic twins.

Monozygotic twins develop from one zygote, which splits and forms two embryos and Dizygotic twins develop from two different eggs.

Monozygotic twins are genetically almost identical and they are always the same sex unless there has been a mutation during the development. They do not have the same fingerprints , because even within the confines of the womb, the fetuses touch different parts of their surroundings, that gives rise to little variations. These twins are genetically very similar but not genetically exactly the same.

Dizygotic twins have an extremely little chance of having the same chromosome profile. They have always different genetic material on each chromosome, due to chromosomal crossover during the process of meiosis. Therefore, dizygotic twins look very different from each other.
