Using benzene or toluene as the only aromatic organic starting material, devise a synthesis for each of the following:

a. o-chlorotoluene

b. 3-bromonitrobenzene

c. p-toluenesulfonic acid

d. 2-chloronitrobenzene

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer.a) Synthesis of o-chlorotoluene taking benzene as starting material.

Friedal craft's alkylation of benzene,

C6 H6 + CH3 Cl               C6 H5 CH3   +HCl

Chlorination of toluene:

C6 H5 CH3 + Cl2                                     o-chlorotoluene +p-chlorotoluene

b) Synthesis of 3-bromonitrobenzene using benzene

Nitration of benzene

C6 H6       +HNO3              C6 H5 NO2 +H2O

Bromination of nitrobenzene

C6 H5 NO2    + Br2       3-bromonitrobenzene + HBr

c) p-toluenesulfonic acid

Sulfonation of toluene

C6 H5 CH3 + Conc.H2SO4    p-toluenesulfonic acid + o-toluenesulfonic acid

d) 2-Chloronitrobenzene

Chlorination of benzene:

C6 H6 + Cl2                      C6 H5 Cl    +   HCl

Nitration of chlorobenzene

C6 H5 Cl + HNO3             2-chloronitrobenzene +   4-chloronitrbenzene

mixture of 10 kmol of 70 mol% benzene in toluene is distilled at atmospheric pressure using differential distillation with a constant boil up the rate of 10 mol/min. When 50% (by mole) has been vaporized, report the residue composition, the average vapor composition, the temperature of the still, and how long the process takes using : 1. A company is using an outdoor pond to get rid of some organic material in a 500 gallons/ hour wastewater stream. In the current situation, the pond which has a surface area of 1.00 acre (= 43,560 ft^2) and the average depth of 6 ft, removes of 62% of the organic material, but the company is not satisfied with this rate of removal and plans on digging a second pond to provide additional treatment of the effluent so that a...

Draw the structures of the organic products in each reaction of the following two-step synthesis. (Hint: The nucleophilic amine attacks the electrophilic carbonyl carbon, and the resulting intermediate undergoes a proton shift and dehydration. Recall what is eliminated in a dehydration process. The second step is a reduction reaction; the reducing agent is NaBH3CN (or H2, metal catalyst). The aromatic ring is unaffected by these reagents. Look at the product of the first reaction and consider what can be easily...
