What parasite causes toxoplasmosis? How is the disease transmitted and what are its typical manifestations?
Ans- Toxoplasmosis is an infection caused by a single- celled parasite. This parasite is named as Toxoplasma gondii. It may be found in cat feces, undercooked meat specially of lamb and pork. It can also be transmitted through contaminated water. Toxoplasmosis can be deadly or can cause severe birth defects for a child whose mother has been infected by the disease.
People under the influence of the disease are more likely to not show any symptoms. According to Center for Disease Control Prevention over 60 million people in U.S are infected by the disease.
People who develop symptoms may experience:-
a fever
a headache
swollen lymph nodes especially in neck
muscle ache and pains
shore throat.
Toxoplasmosis is severe for people with weakened immune system.
