How will you ensure that all appropriate audiences receive information about research and EBP initiatives?
Evidence based practice:
Evidence based practice refers to assembling the data, evaluating the data and integrating the available data into a responsible report. It can helps in a better understanding of the patient’s disease and thus helps in more accurate diagnosis and treatment.
The main goal of EBP is to integrate clinical expertise (expert opinion), external scientific evidence, and client (patient) perspectives to provide high quality services reflecting the interests, values, needs, and choices of the individuals we serve. Evidence based health care practices can be used for treatment of many abnormalities, disease care. Evidence Based Practice (EBP) deals with the implementation of research based findings in clinical practice with respect to nursing professionals. This research based clinical practice ensures moving of research work from bench to bedside. Although this method can positively boost the profession, appropriate application of the research findings in clinical practice is required to overcome the obstacles. A few of the several methods are:
a) Journal clubs: Like basic research, journal clubs provides nurses at all levels to select a research article of interest and discuss the critical findings with others.
b) Research Committees: This is an institution or Health care center based approach where the nurses are taught through active involvement in the ongoing research work, reviewing research work and communicating findings with fellows.
c) CE opportunities: Continuing education (CE) opportunities may involve teaching by an eminent faculty from a reputed institution who discusses about key concepts, research design, sampling and provide informations about grant writing, data collection and reporting the key findings.
d) Research based CPL (Clinical Performance Ladder): This method involves rewarding nurses for their skills and activities depending upon their degree of involvement in research projects, attendance in journal clubs, etc.
According to me, the most effective method for the staff nurse level is journal club. Journal clubs facilitate nurses to gain knowledge about ongoing research work and clinical practice, help criticize and appraise existing research findings and familiarize with the ongoing research work.
For the advance practice nurses, involvement with Research committees might prove to be the most effective method. Involvement in institutional research projects allow the nurses to be a part of the institution review board and work actively towards project reviewing, design, grant writing and project implementation, and communicating the research findings through presentation in conferences and publications.
To communicate my information to all appropriate audiences, I would:
i) Publish my research work in peer reviewed international journals
ii) Present in both basic and clinical research conferences
iii) Present my work as poster presentations in conferences and in journal clubs
iv) Present my work in local healthcare units and committee meetings
v) Present as dissertation
