Mastitis
- Mastitis is an inflammation or infection of the tissues of
breast.
- This inflammation occurs most frequently during the time of
breastfeeding.
- Among lactating mother mastitis caused when bacteria, from the
baby's mouth, enter a milk duct through a crack in the nipple.
- But
mastitis can occur in women who aren't breast-feeding and in
men.
Signs and symptoms of
mastitis
Symptoms
can appear suddenly. Signs and symptoms include:
- Breast
tenderness or warmth to the touch
- A
breast lump or thickening of breast tissue
- Breast
swelling
- Burning
sensation and pain continuously or while breast-feeding
- Skin
redness, often in a wedge-shaped pattern
- Generalized
illness
- Fever
of 101 F (38.3 C) or greater and chills
- Body
pain
- Fatigue
Complications
- Mastitis if left
untreated or due to a blocked duct can cause a collection of pus
(abscess) to develop in the breast
- An
abscess in the breast usually requires surgical
drainage.
- To
prevent this complication of breast abcess, as soon as they develop
signs or symptoms of mastitis they must consult the
doctor
