Myasthenia gravis vs. guillain-barré syndrome what’s the difference in nursing managements.
Ans.) Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disorder characterized by weakness in particular muscle, especially the ocular and bulbar muscles. Its nursing management involves implementation measures to avoid aspiration, try to avoid stress, infection, vigorous physical activity etc. Apart from these, its treatment mainly involves administration of plasmapheresis or intravenous immunoglobulin. Both the mentioned treatments have been equally effective; but plasmapheresis is preferred due to a more rapid action.
Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a neurologic disorder in which the body's immune system attacks part of the peripheral nervous system and causes ascending paralysis and areflexia. Its symptoms often appear secondary to infection. GBS is also caused due to electrolyte imbalance. In nursing management is non-specific and symptomatic. Patients are constantly observed for proper respiratory effect. Patient is kept under continuous EKG monitoring. In 3-4 weeks paralysis will begin to disappear from head and moving downward.
