FeCl3(aq) + 3 NaOH (aq) ---- Fe(OH)3(s) + 3 NaCl(aq)
Is this a redox reaction in the reaction above? Explain.
FeCl3 (aq) + 3 NaOH (aq) ---------------> Fe(OH)3 (s) + 3 NaCl (aq)
It is not a redox reaction. Because each element in the above reaction has same oxidation number at both reactants side and products side.
Fe in FeCl3 = + 3
Fe in Fe(OH)3 = + 3
Na in NaOH = + 1
Na in NaCl = + 1
Cl in FeCl3 = - 1
Cl in NaCl = - 1
OH in NaOH = - 1
OH in Fe(OH)3 = - 1
Since, there is no change in oxidation number of any element, the reaction is not a redox reaction.
