Staffing is an essentialy important process in health care management process because such organisations are usually labor intensive (numerous organizations are required for an organization to accomplish its goals). In addition, many health care organizations work for 24 Hrs a day, 365 days per year and client demands and needs are often variable. This large workforce must reflect an appropriate balance of highly skilled, competant professionals and ancillary support worker
Recruitment is the process of actively seeking out or attracting applicants for existing positions and should be an ongoing process. The organization's abilty to meet its goals and objectives relates directly to the quality of its employees. Hence, knowledge about the specific recruitment strategies is very essential for health care managers
The most effective strategy for recruitment is an interview approach. As a predictor of job performance and overall effectivenss the structured interview is much more reliable than the unstructured interview
The following strategies will assist the manager in developing an interview process with greater reliability and validity
Use a Team Approach
Having more than one person interview the job applicant reuces the interview bias. Staff involvement in hiring can be viewed on continuum from no involvement to a team approach, using unit staff for the hiring decisions. When hiring a manager, using a staff nurse as a part of the interview team is effective, especially if the staff nurse is mature enough to represent the interests and needs of the unit rather than his or her own self interests
Develop a strucured interview format for each job classification
Managers should obtain a copy of the each job description and know the educational and experimental requirements for each position prior to the interview. In addition, because each job has different position requirements, interviews must be strucutured to fit the position. The same structured interview should be used for all employees applying for the same job classification.
A well-developed strucutred interview uses open-ended questions and provide an ample opportunity for the interviewee to talk. The structured interview is advantageous to talk because it allows the interviewer to be consistent and prevents the interview from becoming side-tracked
Use scenarios to determine decision making ability
In addition to obtaining answers to a particular set of questions, the interview also should be used to determine the applicant's decision making ability. This can be accomplished by designing scenarios that require problem solving and decision making skills . The same set of scenarios should be used with each category of employees. Although it takes considerable practice, consistently using a planned sequence in the interview format will eventually yield a reaxed and spontaneous process
