Within the skills
laboratory setting, how would you evaluate
learning?
Evaluation can be done by a variety of ways such as:
- Assessment by direct observation: a teacher can assess the
student by observing how does he/she do the experiments.
- By using laboratory work notebooks: the daily work book of the
student shows how punctual he /she is with the homework as well as
laboratory calculations.
- By using laboratory reports generated by the learner or intern:
the accuracy of the results generated shows the practical skills of
the student.
- By keeping a progress log for each student : periodic
evaluation is done by a progress log.
- By interactive sessions where role play can be done for
students to act as teachers; or even direct seminars can be given:
the students can be evaluated on how did they prepare to address a
group regarding a topic.
- By conducting tests, quizes and poster presentation sessions:
performance in the test shows the learning status as well as
ability to reproduce the learnt topic.
- By conducting presentation sessons periodically on live cases:
this can reveal the presentation and communication skills on lab or
practical aspects
- By giving pre-lab assignments which enables the students to
capture an outline prior to performing the experiment
- By conducting and publishing project works.
