Which of the following is not a primary concern about genetic engineering?
Select one:
a. environmental issues
b. financial issues
c. ethical issues
d. legal issues
e. population issues
b. financial issues: I think that it is most appropriate answer beacuse all other options are mojor cncerns regarding genetic enginnering.
Environmental issues- as genetic enginnering is based on producing new species, that new soecies can cause an imbalance in the environment, for example, an accindent in genetic engineering of a virus, bacteria or fungus can result in a new and stronger type which can cuase an epidemic.
Ethical issues - as more human genes are being used in non-human genes under genetic engineering, such as, human gnes are being used in tomato and pepper to make grow faster. THis arises ethical issues like a person can be either a vegeterian or non-vegeterian at the same time, and for vegeterians its like eating human meat and vice versa. Also, genetically enginnered bovine somatotropin is used in cows to increase milk yield but that can cause mastitis and lamelessness in cows, which is also against ethics.
Legal issues- lagal issues are also there for genetic engineering as their are laws for human privacy, species protection etc which doesn't allow experimenting on animals or humans.
Population issues- There are no clues as to where functional genes are being placed. They may even replace the important genes, instead of mutated genes. Thus, this may lead to another health condition or disease to human. Also, as defective genes are replaced with functional gene, then it is expected that there will be a reduction in genetic diversity and if human beings will have identical genomes, the population as a whole will be susceptible to virus or any form of diseases which can result in epidemics much earlier and on larger scale, And that must be very serious population issue regarding humans. same could be thought of pathogens, as icreasing their pathogenic capacity and making them stronger than ever.
