Regarding the Movie: “Animal Pharm: Inside Transgenics and Cloning”
Choose an animal that was being genetically modified in the movie
explain what they were doing to make it “better.” Do you agree with this or not? Why or why not?
What would you propose be done to solve the same “problem” that they wanted to do?
What was the most striking topic in the movie for you personally and why?
Choose an animal that is being genetically modified.
Rabbit
Explain what they are doing to make it better.
They have inserted fluorescent gene(GFP) of jelly fish in the rabbit that makes it glow at night. This makes rabbit eyes and skin glow green. This they achieved by inserting the gene into egg of rabbit and fertilizing it to produce GMO rabbits.
SO you agree? Why or not?
Agree, as it can provide benefit in studying cell migrations in the organisms during embryogenesis, cell differentiation and organ transplantation.
As it can provide us vital clues on behavior pattern of cells, so its beneficial for research purpose.
How would you have solved the same problem?
I would have prefered choosing the marker that color code the modified cells for visibility, instead of glowing in dark.
Most striking topic in the movie? Why?
I liked the multiple organism gene insertion, where a pig is being modified to have genes from E.coli as well as mice. This is being done with the purpose of breaking phosphorus and adding a genetic switch for enzyme in saliva to control metabolism of phosphorus. This can help in controlling phosphorus release into the environment that can help in survival of other organisms.
