  1. Explain why virtually all of the female reproductive organs, even the prostate tissue, have homologous counterparts in males.

  2. Explain the difference between asexual reproduction and sexual reproduction. Which method provides for the greatest genetic diversity in the offspring? Explain why this is so.

Solutions

Expert Solution

The reproductive organs in male and female are homologous to each other. This is because the male reproductive organ and female reproduvtive organ develop from the same embryonic tissues. The other reproductive structures are homologous to each other as they develop from the undifferentiated gonads of the embryo. The following are homologous structures of male and female respectively:-

  • Testis and Ovary
  • Epididymis and Gartner's duct
  • Prostate gland and Skene's glands
  • Bulbourethral gland and Bartholin's gland

The difference between asexual reproduction and sexual reproduction is tabulated:-

Sexual reproduction method provides for the greatest genetic diversity in the offspring. This is because in sexual reproduction the fusion occurs between male sperm and female egg. Both these gametes have different combinations of genes.Sexual reproduction involves meiosis and crossing over takes place ie;homologous chromosomes pair up and exchange with each other.

Female Reproductive Physiology Directions: For this assignment, you are to create a chart that depicts all the regulatory events during the female reproductive cycle. You will need to include the hormonal events of the hypothalamus, the anterior pituitary and the ovary. In addition, you will need to add sections for follicular development and uterine proliferation. Be sure to label all sections, structures, hormones andphases.
