Identify three components of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act that went into effect in 2014 and discuss their impact or potential impact on the practice of nursing and medicine. Be specific as to what the provision states, who it affects, and the impact that it may have.
Patient protection and affordable care act (PPACA) also known as Obamacare Act is the biggest master strock of US in reforming of healthcare structure of country ever.
This act was mainly focused in to 3 roles
1. Universal coverage: Act has expanded the access to health insurance for common people with income below the poverty level.
2. Quality and public Health Improvement: This act has changed the way how medicinal decisions were taken initially and given rights to the patients against arbitratory action by insurance company.
3. Reduced cost of health and healthy life style: This can be also indicated towards the reformation of healthcare and health insurance industry in United states. Private insurance market for individuals and small group insurance purchasing was reformed so drastically after implementation of ACA reviaion in 2014.
• PPACA shown large impact on nursing and medicine practice:
1. Patient inflow to the hospital and clinics was increased as healthcare was made affordable to large population of US.
2. Emergency room visits were increased by the effect of ACA as patient were become more health conscious than ever before.
3. Healthcare trend was shifted towards out patient care than the inpatient care as what was promoted during campaign of Obamacare acts.
4 Their was sudden 15-20% increase in average growth rate of employment was observed in nursing and other healthcare sectors due to implementation of ACA.
5. Demand for registered nurses was increased as patient to nurse ratio was fallen down due to sudden increase in Patient inflow to the clinics and hospitals.
6. People of US were become more alert regarding the heathcare needs and services due to this Act.
7. Higher learning and boosted reaserch orientation in nursing and medicinal sectors was observed as more number of patients with varying sick conditions were admitted to the hospitals which could be used as case studies for the better understanding.
8. Role and responsibilities of healthcare professionals specially doctors was improved and though the demand of same was surged.
