The XYZ Model is a part of dialogue and discourse in illuminating areas of potential conflict in the work place. Essentially, the acronym represents different elements needed in conflict management and resolution. "X" represents a particular or specific behavior. "Y" represents the consequences of said behavior. "Z" would be emotive element or the feelings associated with the particular behavior. The goal in the XYZ model is to take ownership for the challenges in conflict management and resolution. It is a way in which dialogue is opened and helps all parties involved to understand the implications of actions, their effects on others, and their overall impact on the work environment. The XYZ Model predicates itself on being able to fully engage and immerse the participants in dialogue and exploration of elements that cause conflict. It helps the problem to be owned, as opposed to struggling with the conflict as if it is unmanageable. The XYZ Model enables more voices to be included in the participatory process of conflict management and resolution
In the first case
A co-worker has asked you to go out after work for the second time. The first time you gave an excuse for not being able to go, but you really don’t want to out with this person. What would you say?
X – I will go with him for that day to maintain good relation but tell him that I usually feel very tired for going out after work .
Y – The co worker will understand my side and will considered about what I told him
Z – I will frustrated to go with him for this time but will be happy for later.
In the Second case
A co-worker keeps coming to your work area to socialize. You have been talking as long as the person wants to. But it is affecting getting your work done and you have had to stay late. What would you say
X- I will specifically tell him that not to talk when I am working unless it is urgent . And tell him that we can talk after our work.
Y- I will get time for my work and I will be able to avoid any disturbance during work
Z- I will be happy as I will be able to focus on my job.
In third case
A co-worker has been taking it easy and not doing his share of the work on your two person assignment. You have had to do more than your share, and you don’t want it to continue. What would you say?
X – I will specifically tell him that it is a team work and we both have to contribute for this work otherwise we cannot do work together in future.
Y- The co worker will contribute to work or he will not be a part of team afterwards
Z – I will be happy if he contribute to work and if he did not want so then it will be good for me that he will not be part of team for future work
In the Fourth case
A co-worker is playing music loudly for the third time this week. You don’t like the music and it affects your ability to concentrate. You haven’t said anything until now. What are you going to say?
X- I will ask him that we are not able to concentrate on work and please decrease the volume and if u want to listen in high volume , use headphones
Y- The person will understand this and all will be able to concentrate on job.
Z- I will ab happy and can easily concentrate on job.
