How do sensory adaptation and selection attention relate? Give an example
Sensory adaptation is referred to be occurring at highly low levels at the subconscious. Whereas, selective attention would be identified by selection of s number of stimuli . Though the perceptual system would be having certain limitations, there would be a number of factors ther would be involved in selective attention. These are referred to both as external factors and internal factors.
Sensory adaptation would occur as there would be changes in certain sensory receptors and their sensitivity as the environment would be changed. Sensory adaptation is believed to be experienced by all the senses. For example, while sensing light, the eyes would be adapting in dark as well as light conditions. Dark adaptation would be seen as there would be three forms of changes in the environment with the variations in light stimuli. Dilation of pupil in a dark environment or changes in the size of pupil.
As we enter into a room, we would be encountering a number of fragrances, which catch out attention. This catches our attention with respect to the stimuli experienced. Further, with the changes from a non fragrant to a fragrant environment the fragrances would be perceived through registering smells in the mind.
