does the time it takes for sensory adaptation to occur seem to vary with the substances tested.
Sensory adaptation
sensory adaptation refers to reduction in sensitivity to a stimulus after prolonged exposure to that stimulus.
This occurs in brain.
This can occur in all our basic five senses such as sight, hearing, smell, touch, taste.
However pain receptors does not undergo sensory adaptation.
Time taken for sensory adaptation to ocuur varies with the substance tested. This can be understood by following examples
Example:1 when smell is tested by using different substances like onions(pungent odour) or fried foods, the time taken for sensory adaptation varies.
Example:2 when our hands are placed in cold water and hot water , the time taken for sensory adaptation varies.
Example:3 when we enter into dark room ,our eyes adjust to it by enlarging pupil to accommodate more light .when we enter into bright light, our eyes adjust by narrowing pupils. In both the case the time taken for sensory adaptation varies.
