Section 4: a. What is the role of working memory in language comprehension?
Working memory is of a temporary nature. It helps us to store and manage information for a limited period, that we need to carry out comprehension, reasoning and learning. Working memory helps in language comprehensiuon, using language and learning new words. It has three functional components and they include the phonological loop, the visual sketch pad and the central executive.
The phonological loop has a feature and a process. The inner ear is the phonological store. It does the job of holding sounds for a few seconds. The articulatory control process is linked to speech production. We have stored semantic knowledge. It is the role of the Hippocampus to process incoming words to the stored semantic knowledge. This process helps us in language comprehension.
