Case Study 4

Chris is a nursing student and a self-proclaimed procrastinator. She describes herself as waiting until the last minute to complete projects and study for exams. She is currently taking one online course and three courses in a classroom. Chris tells her academic advisor that she tried color-coding her files, making out schedules for studying, and blocking out time, but she was afraid she'd get caught up in the act of doing those tasks and then wouldn't have time to study. She describes having difficulties finding time to complete her online course work and staying current with the discussions. Chris is already feeling the consequences of her actions, as reflected by her falling grades.

  1. What strategies could Chris's advisor explain to her that might help her overcome procrastination?

  2. Chris explains to her advisor that although she procrastinates, she is also a perfectionist, always wanting to earn A' on all her work. What guidance should her advisor give her?

  3. Chris's advisor tells her to try positive affirmations to boost her self-esteem. What is a positive affirmation, and how would it help Chris in this situation?

  4. Chris explains how the online course is a lot harder than what she expected and she is having trouble keeping up with the class. She tells her advisor that she often forgets about the assignments because the course is more self-directed than her other classes. How should her advisor help her?

Ethan is an orderly in a skilled nursing care facility. He is charged  with supervising patients in the dining room on a day when  two of his coworkers have called in sick, leaving  the facility shorthanded. On this day, several patients seem more irritable than usual, and  Ethan is kept busy  preventing outbursts and calming them. He also worries about  patients prone  to choking episodes, and finds himself feeling harried and stressed.

Wallace, an 80-year-old confined to a wheelchair, demands that Ethan help him back to his room. "It's a mad house in here today,"  he shouts. Ethan  knows  he cannot  leave his post,  and panics when Wallace heads for the door.

Ethan runs ahead  of Wallace, shuts the double doors to the dining room, and locks them.

  1. Has Ethan acted ethically?  Explain  your answer.
  2. What would you do in a similar situation?  Use steps one through five for ethical decision  making to reach a solution. Describe how each step was used.
  3. Do you believe your solution is more ethical  than Ethan's? Why or why not?

The history of eugenics can be dated back to the 19th c (Wilson,2019). Eugenics is a practice that aids in filtering out good and bad genes in one's genetic makeup. Ideally, for some, this practice would focus primarily on ruling out disease processes rather than for aesthetics. However, sometimes in eugenics, it also includes the concept of trying to create a "superior" or "elite" class. Vitro fertilization is an example of a scientific technique used to study health and disease processes in the body. Vitro fertilization has helped researchers make advances in artificial implantation, which has helped many begin families. Vitro fertilization is ethically controversial since some embryos never get fertilized and waste away (American Pregnancy Association, 2020). I'm afraid I have to disagree with the process of this research. According to the natural law theory of ethics, it would be unnatural to try to advance medical research through the extraction or deterioration of an embryo.

Eugenics, broken down, means good genes (Pence, 2017). There are positive and negative eugenics. Some contemporary developments in eugenics is “designer babies.” A designer baby is a baby whose genetic makeup has been designed prior to its birth to ensure desired characteristics or to prevent undesired ones (Pence, 2017). This reminds me of people wanting to have Olympic athletes as children, so they try to seek someone with the characteristics that they want their child to have, or go ‘shopping’ at a sperm bank to have the genes they are looking for. Genetics is simply heredity, or the genes passed on from parent to child. I do not necessarily believe in altering genes or genetics. I can understand the prevention of disease, but still believe that things should happen the way they’re supposed to happen. I can see the aspect of medicine to prevent disease, or the genetic testing and treatment options, but I do not believe it should be used to create a ‘super baby’ to where they are built to be superior and be the best athlete, or the best musician.
