Nicotine has affect on many drugs action.

The two most important drug which is affected by nicotine is

1)Beta blockers

2)Benzodiazepines

1)Beta blockers:Nicotine increases the blood pressure and heart rate there by reducing the effect of drug.Due to this the patient may require higher dose.

Ex:Propranalol(decreased anti hypertensive action on body due to the affect of nicotine)

2)Benzodiazepines: Nicotine in the body causes central nervous system stimulation and counteracts the seadtion and drowsiness induced by the Benzodiazepines.It will lead to need of higher dosage.

Ex:Diazepam (decreased drug action due to nicotine affect)

Addressing this issue includes:

  • Educating client regarding harmful effects of nicotine on body.
  • Nicotine usage causes need of higher drug dose in the paients which may cause other toxic effects.
  • Encourage for cessation of nicotine usage.
  • Educate about benefits of nicotine cessation.
  • Closely monitor the patient one who is a nicotine user.
  • Adjust the drug dosage based on the nicotine usage/cessation.
