Ans. The protein encoded by a gene at rough endoplasmic reticulum needs to be folded into proper functional structure. Nascent proteins produced can not function as it is and they become functional as enzymes or structural proteins on proper folding and modifications. For proper folding COP proteins are involved. Once folded properly, protein is transported via vesicles from rough endoplasmic reticulum to golgi bodies. At golgi bodies, modification of proteins by adding sugar or lipid or other molecules take place. On proper structure and proper modifications, they are transported to the target destination inside the cell or outside the cell. Transportion to their target destination depends on the signal peptide present on the protein. Inside the cell proteins may function as structural proteins such as membrane proteins or as enzymes catalysing many pathway or they may be exported out of the cell to perform different functions.
