In “I, Too,” Hughes is responding to another poet; who is this poet and why is Hughes responding to him? What is the theme or meaning of “I, Too”?
INTRODUCTION :- "I,TOO" was one of the poem being transcribed by Lanston Hughes.In the poem,Hughes wrote down about the feelings of AfroAmerican residing in America. Through this poem he is also giving answer to one of the poet.
IN "I,TOO" HUGHES IS RESPONDING TO ANOTHER POET,WHO IS THIS POET,AND WHY HUGHES IS RESPONDING TO HIM?
I, Too is one such poem which is basically an answer given back by Hughes to a poet in the form of this poem.The poet whom Hughes is answering is Walt Whitman.Hughes is basically giving the answer to one of the poem provided by him,regarding the hearing of America singing,as in that poem,Whitman describes about the happiness that each and every American feels when they consider their country,and for celebrating it,they sing merrily.
Hughes is responding to him because he feels even though in America the situation for African American, is quite unlike,in comparison to other Americans,yet he possess complete right with respect to America,and should be able to celebrate and show his patriotic feeling like others do.
WHAT IS THE MAIN THEME OR MEANING OF I,TOO?
The main theme of "I,TOO" is to feel free is the biggest aim in life.In this poem even though the poet is being sorrounded with many obstacle,as such unfairly treatment from the white people,discrimination,yet he has some sort of optimistic feels inside him,which helps him to get the feeling of liberity in him.The author has not caught himself in any such discrimination,and his mind is free from all of it,and this itself is one of the stepping stone towards attaining his aim that is liberty.
