Question

Answer

Are the models isomers?

(Which isomers) if it is butane, there is no possibility of isomers because in butane all are single bonds, C-C single bond case rotation are possible so those are not isomers.

Bond angles and molecular geometry

If it is butane then, in butane all carbons are sp3 hybridised carbons so bond angel will be 120° and geometry will be tetrahedron structure on each carbon

Describe the experience trying to rotate a double bond

Rotation of double bond is not possible because π-bond prohibits the interconversion of the two isomers.

Bond angles and molecular geometry of the 2 center carbon atoms of cis-2-butene

Bond angle – 127.2°

Is it possible to convert between cis-2-butene and trans-2-butene without breaking bonds?

It is not possible to convert between cis-2-butene and trans-2-butene without breaking bonds. The double bond does not allow free rotation so the configuration is fixed and cannot be converted unless bonds are broken and reformed in the new configuration.

Why are cis-2-butene and trans-2-butene referred to as geometric isomers?

Geometric isomers mean molecules that are locked into their spatial positions with respect to one another due to a double bond or a ring structure.

Methyl groups of cis-2-butene and trans-2-butene are locked into their spatial positions with respect to one another due to double bond that's why both are geometric isomers

Define the term structural isomer and explain how it differs from a geometric isomer.

Structural isomers mean molecules having same molecular formula and bonded together in different orders, it is opposed to stereoisomer.

Stereoisomers having same molecular formula and sequence of bonded atoms but differ in the three-dimensional orientations of their atoms in space.

Geometric isomers are one of the categories in stereo isomers.
