i) Based on the molecular geometry of the molecules from question 1, circle the following molecules that are nonpolar:
BeF2
KrF2
KrF4
NH4+
H2Te
ii) Write the bond-line formulas for the following straight-chain alkanes.
(a) Hexane (b) Octane
i) BeF2 is linear molecule with sp hybridisation in the central atom that is Be.
In this molecule both the dipoles are equal and opposite in direction and hence the molecule is non-polar.
ii) KrF2 :In this the central atom Kr has sp3d hybridisation with three lone pairs and hence the shape of the molecule is linear.
But the molecule has net polarity. Hence the molecule is polar.
iii) KrF4: In this molecule the central atom Kr has sp3d2 hybridisation with 2 lone pairs.
Hence the shape of the molecule is square planar. The molecule is polar.
iv) NH4+ : In this molecule the central atom N has sp3 hybridisation with zero lone pairs hence the molecule is tetrahedral shape with zero lone pairs and the molecule is non-polar.
v) H2Te: The central atom Te is having sp3 hybridisation with 2 lone pairs.the shape of the molecule is V-shape or bent shape.
Hence the molecule is polar.
II)a) Hexane molecule has molecular formula: C6H14
b) Octane : Molecular formula: C8H18
