(1) What is the relationship, if any, between the following pairs of substances :

a) Strong electrolyte and strong acid or base.

b). Weak electrolyte and weak acid or base.

c). The cause of the differences in the conductances (currents) of isomolar solutions of KNO3 and Ca(NO3)2

Solutions

Expert Solution

a) strong electrolyte means which ionizes completely into the liquid state or in aqueous solution state. strong electrolytes are made from strong acids and strong bases

all strong acids , all strong bases are strong electrolytes. along with strong acids and strong bases strong salts are also strong electrons

example : strong acids : HCl , HNO3 , H2SO4

                 strong bases : KOH , NaOH , Mg(OH)2

                strong salts : KCl , NaNO3 , Na2SO4

b) weak electrolytes dissociates only small amount. all weak acids and weak bases are weak electrolytes. along with these weak salts are also weak electrolytes

example : weak acids : CH3COOH , HCN , HCOOH

                weak base : NH3 , CH3NH2

               weak salts : CH3COONH4

c)   the difference is only number of ions . number ions increases conductance also increases

KNO3 --------------> K+ + NO3- . it has two ions

Ca(NO3)2 --------------> Ca2+ + 2NO3- . it has three ions. so Ca(NO3)2 conductance is more than KNO3
