In: Nursing
. Using the Minnesota Wheel briefly describe a potential action/intervention that a public health nurse could take to address the chosen indicator (Sexual transmitted disease). Discuss which of the three core functions (assessment, assurance, policy development) AND which 10 essential service (see Mod 1) the action addresses.
Public health nursing interventions
operate an sexually transmitted disease such as HIV gannorea
testing as part of screening and identifying individuals with
unrecognised health risk factors or asymptomatic disease conditions
in population.
Based on assessment of 3 types of screening described as mass
screening, targeted screening and periodic screening. The PHN nurse
practitioner performs a physical examination on a young poulation
at ahealth clinic and, with their consent, includes tests for
gonorrhea and chlamydia. The PHN counsels them regarding the risk
and STD preventions. Some PHNs operate an STD/HIV testing site in
metropolitan area. Targeting populations known to be at
disproportionate risk for STDs. The PHNs screen for gonorrhea,
syphilis, chlamydia, and other STDs and provide health teaching
&counseling to all clients during the assessment rather than
waiting for results because many clients do not return or do not
choose to give their real names.
To control the STDs and prevent the actions goverment also have
developed some policies to overcome this issue such as
1. Public health agency issues both federal and state family
planning monies, which contracts out to local clinics for the
provision of family planning services to low-income women.
2.The PHNs in the agency negotiate a requirement in the contract
that clinics must routinely screen all family planning clients for
STDs.
3. The public awareness programme is being conducted in society to
make people aware about STDs, their symtoms, reson for spreading
and precaustion need to be taken to be safe from setting
suffered.
4. implementation of social marketing and outreach prior to
screening are utilized when mass screening is planned
5. Provident opportunities for health teaching and counseling
experts almost always present themselves, either implemented
simultaneously with screening or as a feature of the interview
conducted immediately afterward.
These all will implement the preventive meassure of STD
control.
Following are essential service
action need to be undertaking to address the issue.
1. Determine if the health risk or disease is an important threat
to the population’s health.
2. Consider the extent to which the population believes the health
risk or disease an important health problem.
3. Determine if adequate information exists about the outcomes
expected from screening.
4. Determine if the risk or disease has a recognizable latent or
early symptomatic state which makes early identification
feasible.
5. Decide if the risk’s or disease’s natural course of history is
understood sufficiently to allow early intervention.
6. Consider whether an acceptable treatment for the risk or disease
exists.
7. Determine whether a suitable test exists.
8. Determine if the screening test is acceptable to the population
of interest.
9. Arrange for further assessment/diagnosis and treatment for those
with positive findings.
10. Determine whether adequate funds or resources exist to support
the entire process.
