What are the major challenges that face expatriates while living abroad?
Please use your own words
A different culture
The cultural difference is the biggest challenge for any expatriate. All societies have their own, none-like standards, traditions, beliefs, and practices. It will be really difficult for you to adapt when you move into a country with an extremely different culture. If you're not open-minded and willing to learn about the new culture, you'll find it really hard to connect with and work with local people.
Safety and security
There are plenty of things that can go wrong when you live in a new country. Health issues and injuries, scams are just a few of the common problems of expats. We become an easy target for the scammers because they are new to the country and are not well aware of their surroundings. If you're not diligent enough and have no coverage, when living abroad, you're likely to face a number of issues. It's also a big problem for expats to get sick abroad. Mere travel insurance is not enough to cover all of your healthcare expenses when you are continually moving into a new environment and working under pressure.
Loneliness and depression
Moving into a new country brings the expats away from their friends, their families. It's also really difficult for some expats to make friends with new people. As a result, they frequently find themselves alone on weekends and develop depression slowly. That's why; expats are always advised to stay back at home in touch with their families, friends and colleagues. Communication has become both really cheap and convenient with Twitter, Skype, VOIP and other devices, and the expats must take full advantage of this. The expats must try to mix with their new colleagues as well.
Local adjustments
Citizens will have to travel in a country with a huge time difference, unique climatic conditions, schedules and rules in most international assignments. It takes a lot of time to adapt to these and you'll just feel sick if you pressure yourself. The expats should therefore slowly adapt to these and, if possible, must arrive at the posting site at least a week later so that they have sufficient time to get used to the local environment.
