How does diabetes mellitus affect
1. The physiological mechanisms through which low physical activity may be associated with this disease, and
2. How/if increasing physical activity can help reduce the effects of this disease once someone is diagnosed (this may not always be possible)
Credible sources needed
1 Excercising with elevated blood glucose levels increase the secretion of glucagone, growth hormone and catecholamines. The liver then release more glucose and the result is an increase in the blood glucose level.Ideally a person with dibetes should excercise at the sametime and in the same amount each day.Regular daily excercise rather than sporadic excercise should be encouraged .In general ,a slow gradual increase in the excercise period is encouraged.A pattern of gradual ,consistent excercise should be planned that does not exceed the patients physical activity.In.creased blood pressure associated with excercise may aggravate diabetic retinopathy .In general a sow gradual increase in the excercise period is encouraged.People with diabetes should discuss an excercise program with their health care providers and undergo a careful medical evaluation with appropriate diagnostic studies before beginnning the program.
2 Excercise is extremely important in diabetes management because of its effect on lowering blood glucose levels and reducing cardiovascular risk factors.Excercise lowers blood glucose level by increasing the uptake of glucose by body muscles and by improving insulin utilization .it also alter blood lipid concentrations, increasing levels of high-density lipoproteins and decreasing total cholesterol and this is especially important for people with diabetes, because of their increased rik of cardiovascular disese. The physiologic decrease in circulating insulin that normally occurs with excercise cannot occur in patients treatedw with insulin.Physical activity that is consistent and realistic is beneficial to elderly people with diabetes.
