Protein electrophoresis reveals 5 different fractions of protein. (Albumin, alpha-1, alpha-2, beta and gamma)Though the pre-albumin fraction does not show up on the electrophoresis pattern, please include information on the pre-albumin fraction with the albumin fraction. Explain what components make up each fraction. Your grade will reflect how well you describe each component. Stick to the main points, such as: what components are in the fraction and what are the actions of the components. ANSWER: Explain what disease states are associated with a decrease in each protein fraction and what disease states are associated with an increase in each protein fraction.
Protein electrophoresis produce 5 fractions of protein.
Albumin : it is a largest protein componant of human serum. Produce in liver accounts for about 60% of the protein in the blood. Increase in albumin fraction cause dehydration, impaired liver function whereas decrease in fraction cause hemorrhage , chronic infections etc.
Alpha 1 : this fraction consist of alpha 1 antitrypsin, thyroid binding globulin and transcortin componants. Increase in this fraction lead to pregnancy and decrease in this fraction lead to antitrypsin deficiency
Alpha 2 consist of alpha 2 microglobulin, hepetoglobin and ceruplasmin componant. Increase in this fraction cause adrenal insufficiency, advanced diabetes and decrease in this fraction leads to malnutrition and megablastic anemia.
Beta fraction. Consist of transferrin, beta lipoprotein, IgA, IgM componants. Increase lead to carcinoma, diabetes mallitus whereas decrease lead to protein malnutrition.
Gamma fraction consist of most immunoglobulins and C reactive protein componants. Increase in this fraction lead to cirrhosis, chronic lymphocytic leukemia whereas decrease in this fraction cause hypogammagloulinemia.
