1. Under the U.S. President George W. Bush and UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, the coalition aimed at "disarming Iraq with weapons of mass destruction, ending Saddam Hussein's support for terrorism, and liberating the Iraqi people." Some put much greater focus on the effect of the September 11 attacks, the role that they played in shifting U.S. political calculations, and the increase in the movement for democracy.
2. On 29 August 2005, Hurricane Katrina made landfall off the Louisiana coast. It reached land with winds hitting speeds as high as 120 miles per hour as a Category 3 storm. The storm is also considered one of the worst in US history because of the resulting damage and loss of life. An estimated 1,200 people died as a direct result of the hurricane, which also caused property damage valued at $108 billion, making it the most expensive hurricane on record.
