Why is police discretion such an important concern?

Police can take anyone in custody if he is found guilty or he can let him go with a warning. Discretion means making decision on the circumstances. And it is really important for an officer to have a Discretion power so he makes decision that the culprit should be taken into custody for his crime, based on the circumstances. And sometimes it is really important for police to let go a person because the small crime he committed can be excused like breaking red light.

Describe and discuss what the police do.

Well, police has many roles to play, from roaming around the streets to catching the culprits. It plays a very important role in the society to maintain peace. Police answer your call in police station and as soon as it gets it rush to your spot to solve your problem. It takes down you complains and tries to solve your problem. It roams around night so you can sleep properly and not burglary takes place. It also makes sure that if any disaster takes place it reach out that place to help the victims. If you met with an accident it reaches the spot too and makes sure that you are taken to hospital.

Describe the three styles of policing according to James Q. Wilson

According to James Q. Wilson the three styles of policing are Watchman, Legalistic, Service

Watchman: This focuses on maintaining order. The watchman department makes sure that its focus on resolving disputes. And its main objective is to keep the peace.

Legalistic: This department make sure there are no violations of law and they enforce criminal law. Same like watchman legalistic also keep an eye on crimes but in a formal way. The legalistic style is popular in state police and state highway patrol agencies

Service: This department is more focus on crimes that violate citizen privacy such as burglary and robbery. Officers tend to make arrests only when necessary.

What are special-needs searches? Give some examples

Special need searches mean gathering evidence for crime investigation. A police can search and conduct a search operation to find a evidences. They don’t need any warrant or probable cause.

The example are: Border search, Airport searches, Custody-related searches, Employee drug testing, Student searches (Middle, High, College), Prenatal Patient Drug Testing, Administrative Searches.
