Solutions

Expert Solution

Considering the image above, figures (a), (b) and (c) show Batch, Semi-continuous and Continuous processes respectively.

In the operation below we are carrying out filtration of the media by using a Resin.

(a) A fixed amount of liquid has been charged into the reactor. The concentration of contents in the reactor as well as concentration of solute in the resin is continuously changing.
(b) The liquid is entering the reactor at concentration Co, obtaining the steady state concentration Cf and leaving at the steady state concentration. The concentration of solute in the resin is changing with time.
(c) In this case both the resin and liquid enter the reactor at a given concentration, obtain steady state and leave at the steady state concentration.

Batch Process

Continuous Process

1. All the material is charging into the equipment at the beginning and there is no entry or exit of material till the operation is complete.

1. There is continuous entry and exit of material from the equipment.

2. Used for smaller quantity of material

2. Used for larger quality of material

3. There are batch-to-batch variations. Product quality is not consistent.

3. Consistent product quality obtained.

4. Scale up is quick and we can switch to different products.

4.Scale up requires thorough understanding of the process.
